Organizing Your Child's Bedroom

Well, Christmas vacation has ended. Monday we will return to home schooling and our regular schedule. Even though I did not get done all the projects I had wanted to over our vacation...I feel happy. Every small thing I did accomplish - I felt a sense of accomplishment. And that is important. I most likely will never finish my to do list...there will always be something else to do. So be happy and satisfied with what you have done...and just keep working at it! It is a great thing to remember this New Year!

What else happened this week? My washer drain plug would not drain which caused water to overflow onto my kitchen floor and also onto the carpet in the girls' bedroom closets. PTL that we were able to borrow a steam cleaner machine to clean up the water...my father-in-law and husband were also able to unplug the drain and it works again! No plumber bill. You know...I can't help but think that it pays to tithe and obey God in this area. I firmly believe that because we are faithful to tithing...that God doesn't stop us having problems but he brings along people to help us solve those problems and in turn saves us from losing money. He has been truly faithful in the last month in this area and I praise Him!

The weather has been truly un-December-like! We hit temps in the 60's this week...and I even watered our lawn and our trees yesterday. It is cooling down; however, this next week is supposed to be still in the 50's. Such a mild and dry winter for Reno so far.

My sister gave me an idea on how to help organize better in the girls' room. Four girls in one bedroom...clothes, shoes, beds, toys. It could become quite chaotic very quickly if you are not organized. :) So...yesterday I spent several hours trying to organize and make sense out of it all.

The first thing I did was to pitch lots of stuff. Broken toys, tattered books, old coloring books, etc.

A few ideas I utilized from my sister:

*You don't have to have every toy your child owns in their room. Separate books and toys into storage bins. Keep one bin in the room and the rest in the garage. Every so often swap out the bins. The kids will have forgotten about the toys that they haven't played with in awhile and will appreciate each toy.

*Store your child's books in storage bins vertically. They are easier to pull in and out and to keep organized.

*Separate each category of toys into different bins. For instance, I created one bin for my girls' kitchen play toys. When they want to play restaurant, I can bring that one bin from the garage and they have all they toys together. When they are done, we put them all back in that bin and it is back to the garage. Have you ever seen a child looking for one toy and he dumps out entire bins of toys just to find it? Yes. :/ This method will keep that from happening. :) I also have a bin for the Barbies/Doll accessories. I have one bin for the large baby/toddler toys. Separate however you like. These are just a few ideas.

These bins are now stacked neatly in the garage. :)

A few ideas I have utilized myself:

I bought one colored storage crate for each daughter. These are on the floor of their clothes closets. This is where their shoes are stored. It is simple and easy for even a toddler to put away and find their own shoes if they are stored this way.

My two oldest daughters have one large bin each that is able to slide under their bed. This is where they can keep their purses, small toys, knick knacks...whatever they like. I like it because it is out of sight. :) If they want something, they just slide it out from under the bed, pick out what they want and push it back.

I store baby wipes and diapers under the baby crib. Diapers are kept in a plastic basket. It is easily accessible and the girls can reach them to bring me a diaper and wipes when I call. :)

I have a large tote bag for our library books. They can be kept in the tote when we are not using them. This helps them from being lost and ready to be returned by just picking up the tote and dropping off at the library.

I have one smaller bin for coloring books and one small bin for crayons and small art supplies. I keep crayons not in their original boxes but in the small plastic school boxes. It is much easier for kids to pick out crayons and then return them to the plastic boxes instead of the small cardboard boxes.
(I keep our extra art and school supplies in a separate bin in our school/office closet. When school supplies go on sale, I buy enough for the entire year. Then when we need another glue stick, we just go to the school supply bin. :)

I label all the bins so it is easy to find the bin I need quickly.

I have bins as well for our outdoor toys. Balls, bats, kites and the girls bike helmets and pads.

These are just a few ideas that you can do and create a peaceful atmosphere in your home instead of unorganized chaos. :)

A Different Type of Couponing!

So...this week is not a great week for my regular couponing. Walgreens and CVS just don't have any worthwhile deals - at all this week.

However, I have made it my goal and mission to start now on next Christmas gifts...as well as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. I have always waited until the last minute...I never have any money...I pay more than I should for items I don't really care for...it has been a vicious cycle for me. I really do love giving for my family but sometimes am overwhelmed by it - my fault only to blame.

So, this week was a great time to start on my new goal! Since I wasn't couponing at the drugstores and I have some Christmas money to spend...I got in on some great deals!

Walgreens: Until Dec. 31st, you can get 25 FREE 4x6 prints! I uploaded and ordered mine online, entered the code, and had them shipped to the nearest Walgreens to my parents' home. (Ship to a store and there will be no cost for shipping!) Bam! A gift for my parents...25 fun photos from our Disneyland trip...ALL FREE and I didn't have to leave my home or pay to ship them!

6pm.com: They are having a 75% off select merchandise online. I ordered an item for an upcoming gift...paid for it with my FREE $20 credit that I received on my Serve account for signing up...FREE shipping to the home of the receiver...equals a FREE gift delivered to a loved one! That is some good shopping! :)

ING Direct.com: I signed up for an account with them...after receiving my card and making 3 purchases of any size...I will receive $50 deposited into my account! $50 FREE money! Another great deal to take advantage of...and therefore enabling me to buy more gifts. :)

Old Navy: They are currently having great sales of many items up to 75% off. Today, I went to two different stores and these are the deals I was able to get:

2 t-shirts for Eric: $1.13 each!
1 sweater for Eric: $4.00!
1 gift set of matching hat, scarf and gloves for Eric: $1.33 for all three items!
4 pairs of flip flops in different colors for Eric: $.46 each pair!!
1 pair of slippers for Eric: $2.00!

All these items for 75% off the regular price plus I used my Groupon that I had purchased the week before giving me an additional $10 off my purchase...giving me these great prices on these items. :)

My second purchase at the second store:

Techno hoodie (It is a zip up hoodie for when I go to the gym that has built in ear buds that you can plug into your phone or MP3 player! This is actually the one thing I splurged on myself.) $6.74! It is gray and pink - love it!
Matching set of gloves and hat (For Sierra) - $2.49!
The biggest deal of my day: A black wool coat for Eric (He actually asked for one this year for Christmas so I know he wanted one. This is for next Christmas for sure!!) And the final price...$4.71!!!!!!!! (Originally $79.99)

I was able to get the coat so cheaply because of my Groupon, the 60% off sale, and I received $20 Holiday cash back with their current promotion!

And no one say anything to the hubby!! LOL! I have to keep this one a secret for a whole year. :) But it is worth it.

IF...I would have bought all these above items at regular price...I would have paid $213.70. After using my Groupons, taking advantage of the 60-75% sale prices, and receiving Holiday cash...I paid $28.87!!

Love, love, love!!!

Visiting Santa 2011

Visiting Santa - Christmas 2011.

Every year, we take the girls to our local library for storytime and to see Santa. It is a fun time for us all. :) The girls write their letters to Santa and give them to Santa when they talk to him.

This is Summer's second Christmas. She sat on his lap but she would not look at him! LOL! He talked and talked to her but she had this look like..."Look dude. I don't know you and I'm not going to interact with you." Ha ha!

Hosting a brunch...Tips and Hints

Merry Christmas!
Today, I hosted a Christmas brunch for our church family.  For our brunch, the menu was:  Biscuits and gravy, sausage and egg breakfast burritos, hearty breakfast egg casseroles, fruit medley, donuts...orange juice, milk and coffee.
For those who may be interested in some tips for hosting a breakfast or brunch for a group - here is what I learned.
1.  I created a sign-up sheet.  Each individual or family needed to sign up and how many people in their group/family.  This gave me a fairly accurate count for the meal.
2.  I planned the menu.  Plan a variety of items - but not too many that you cannot do all things well...plan for items you can prepare the day before if possible...plan hot and cold items.
3.  I set up the serving and seating areas/tables early in the week.
-Tablecloths, cups, plasticware, napkins, condiments, serving utensils.
4.  We do not have a kitchen in our church building.  We have a few cupboards, a small counter space and one sink.  So to keep things warm for the meal without ovens, stoves, etc...I utilize the inexpensive steamer sets.  It is basically a wire basket with places to set the little burners.  You then use a tray with water in it and then place your pans of food on top of the steamer trays.  They work very well and kept all my food nice and warm.  I purchased ours at Sam's Club.
5.  This is the breakdown on preparation for the food:

Biscuits and gravy
I purchased the pre-made sausage gravy in one gallon cans at Sam's Club.  All I had to do in the morning was to open and heat in two crockpots.  The biscuits:  I purchased in packs of 36 - Pillsbury Homestyle Buttermilk.  You bake for 20 minutes each batch and they turn out to be the huge beautiful homemade looking biscuits!  Be aware - it took me until almost 2am to bake ALL the biscuits because each batch takes 20 minutes...so start early. :)  Before serving, I warmed them on the steamer tray and they were delish!

Sausage and Egg Burritos
These are fairly simple to do - a little time consuming.  However, I received a multitude of compliments on my burritos and I was kind of amused.  Why?  It is simply eggs, sausage and cheese rolled in a tortilla.  LOL!  However, I never turn down a cooking compliment so yay for me!  Even though there were leftovers,  even the leftover burritos were all taken home!  Another yay for me!  LOL!
Fry your sausage - drain.  Let cool.
Scramble your eggs.  You can do 12 - 18 eggs at one time.  Let cool.
Add the amount of sausage you prefer to your bowl of eggs.  For convenience, you can purchase the foil squares.  They really make the rolling process quicker.  Or you can use regular foil.
*I think the key of preparing these the night before is cooling the filling.  Then there is no heat and steam to make the tortilla soggy.
Roll each tortilla with your egg/sausage mixture and shredded cheddar cheese.  I reheated in the oven the next morning for 30-45 minutes (depending on how many you have) and then kept warm in the steamer.  Serve with salsa and Tabasco sauce.

Hearty Breakfast Egg Casseroles
This is a simple casserole that is prepared the night before then baked in the morning.  Since I could not bake the casseroles myself, I prepared them and delivered them to several ladies in the church who baked them for me and brought them to church.  Yum!

I also served a variety of donuts that I purchased the night before - glazed, powdered, plain cake and chocolate cake donuts.  I also served two fruit bowls with a medley of frozen fruits - peaches, strawberries, blueberries, etc.  For drinks:  coffee, milk and orange juice.

I was very pleased with the day.  This was my first time preparing and cooking for a group of 60 - my largest so far.  It was a blessing to serve this brunch on the Lord's birthday for all the people I love and care for - my church family. :)

Christmas Eve

Merry Christmas Eve!  Today, we are spending our Christmas Eve with the Hurley family in Wellington, NV.  We are having a ham and lots of good food...I made a cheeseball, Tex Mex dip with tortilla chips and cottage mashed potatoes.

I hope you have a wonderful day with your friends and family celebrating our Lord's birth.

A Christmas Miracle

Here is a story of a blessing that is too good not to share...

Quite awhile back...my husband asked me to take his truck and get the oil changed, the tires rotated and aligned.  His tires were wearing down on just one side and he thought perhaps it was because of the alignment. He has very large tires and are not inexpensive so he was worried if we didn't take care of it...that we would have to get new tires.

I took it to a tire place only to have them tell me they would not align it...much less even rotate the tires.  They also gave me an estimate of what repairs would need to be done on the truck to fix our problem.  The estimate:  $1,600.

Well, since we just didn't have $1,600 to throw into repairs...we just let it be.  There wasn't anything else we could do about it.  Well, except stress.  And that is what my hubby did.

Recently, my husband left his dome light on overnight and the next morning, we couldn't get it jumped.  Finally, after the second day, we got it running again.

Not sure if something else was wrong, we asked a man from our church, Bro. Al, if he would look at it.  Tonight, we stopped by Bro. Al's to pick up our repaired truck.  Bro. Al said, "It is literally a miracle that you drove it the week before you brought it to me.  I don't know how you even made it to my house...if you would have literally hit a speed bump...your tires would have came right off.  It is just a miracle."

I know that good things happen to good people.  Also bad things happen to good people.  But I felt that God was saying to me in a very personal way..."Rebekah, you are living right and you put Me first.  You don't give Me excuses.  I like that.  I want to show you that I recognize your love for Me not with just your words but with your actions.  I want to take care of you.  My angels held your truck together to keep your family safe. And I gave you an earthly angel to fix your truck - for less than $100 in parts.  You are loved."

This is my special blessing this Christmas week. :)

Sunday Blessings

Two blessings from Sunday...

Mrs. Lisa Maxwell, one of our Sunday School helpers, stepped in for one of our teachers who was out of town for her anniversary.  This was her first time teaching in the Junior age class and she did so very well!  I know she was nervous but did a great job.  (I am the Sunday School nursery worker...so I get the opportunity to listen to the children's classes as well. ;)  I am grateful for ladies like Lisa who are willing to step out of their comfort zone and give to others what has been given to them.  Love you Lisa!

Also, since my husband was in Boise last week, a man from our church, Bro. Al, was willing to take a look at his truck.  We have been having some problems with it but it is 15 years old.  LOL!  He told my husband last night...I don't know how you got your truck to my house.  If you would have even hit a speed bump, the tires might have came off...that's how bad it is.
Thank God for His hand of protection to us! But I am not surprised.  He is a good God and He takes care of His children.  :)

Video: Summer and Her Wal-Mart Christmas Tree

This is a video of Summer...she loves going into Wal-Mart because of their large Christmas tree in the entrances!  She flips out when she sees them and it is so cute. :)  We call it "her Christmas tree".

Thursday :)

Combos and Crest toothpaste...FREE! Clorox 2 Stain Remover...$.67 each!

2 packs of UP2U gum, Reese chocolate tree, Pain relief patch, Goody bobby sliders...All FREE!
2 Maalox Advanced antacid tablets - $.74 each!

Still no snow in sight...however, this mild December weather is nice on the heating bill. :) Still, I am waiting for that big snow...where we can cuddle up on the couch with hot cocoa and Christmas cookies in our blankets and watch the snow fall outside our windows.

My husband is in Boise, Idaho this week - Wednesday through Saturday. He is the regional manager where he works at Bennett Medical so he occasionally travels. Yesterday, after school, we cleaned the house and then made our Christmas sugar cookies. The girls have been waiting for this for awhile.

Today, I am making dinner for one of our families in our church. She is pregnant and hasn't been feeling well...so I thought dinner for their family would be nice. We will drop it off after school and do a little couponing.

I hope you have a good day. :)

Cookie Baking Day

Today, my husband flew out to Boise for his work as a regional manager. So I thought it would be a good day to bake our Christmas cookies. :)

Sierra was the most enthusiastic. She loved the whole project. :)

Some of our finished project. :)

Blessings...

Someone from the church gave us this like new freezer! I am very blessed to receive a gift like this. God is so good to us. :)

Now to get some food to fill it up! LOL!

A Special Letter from My Aunt...

I received this e-mail on the evening of December 13th...my Grandma's birthday... from my Aunt Sandy telling a wonderful story about her daughter (my cousin), Diana, and her husband, Jeremy. I wanted to share this. I know that it has a special place in my family's heart this Christmas season. Thank you for sharing this memory with me and my family...

If you ever doubt that God works through people without them even knowing it, let me share this story with you that happened today.
Those of you who knew my mom, knew that she loved many things in life. Her God, teaching Sunday School every Sunday, and putting up the Christmas tree Thanksgiving night with all her grandkids gathered round her. It was a time of laughter and memories made for all. When mom passed away this past summer, we had to sort through all of her belongings and try to decide what to do with them. While sorting, we found pieces of the treasured Christmas tree, in several different places. In the final years of her life, dementia made mom do things differently than what most of us would do. So we were not sure whether the tree was even all there, or if it was missing pieces. My oldest daughter Diana had just gotten married in August, so I decided I would take her the tree in hopes that all the pieces were there, and it could be her and Jeremy's first tree.
Diana had thought that maybe her and Jeremy would skip putting up a tree this year since it can get quite expensive, and since they had just set up housekeeping thought they would just wait and maybe get ornaments when they went on sale after the holidays. However, Jeremy felt that they really needed to go ahead and try to put the tree up. Diana was not as enthusiastic as Jeremy was about this project, but she went along with his urging to make it happen. So, they went on a search for lites and a few decorations. They first went to Findlay OH a couple of days ago, and could not find any lites at Wal-Mart. No big deal. The next day they went to Ottawa Wal-Mart. Still no lites. So today, (the 13th) they finally decided to go to a Rite Aid and see if they could find some. Lo and behold they had some. So tonight at Jeremy's insistence, they put up mom's tree. (There are actually some of mom and dad's original ornaments on the tree from when they had their first tree from over 50 years ago.)
As Diana put the tree up, she said the memories of all the years putting this tree up with her grandma, cousins and sister flooded through her mind. Listening to the old 33 records of Christmas songs, playing freeze to the Christmas blinking lights, and waking up to grandma's homemade cinnamon rolls in the morning. How good God is to give us memories. When the tree was finished, about 10:30pm, Diana decided to snap a picture of it with her cell phone and send it to me. When she snapped that picture, she suddenly knew why this tree had to be put up it today. Not yesterday, not tomorrow. Today. For it was mom's birthday. God used Jeremy to encourage Diana to get this done, never knowing that was a special day for our family.
So the next time you wonder if God is listening to you, and wonder if he really cares, the answer is an emphatic "yes". For those who did not know our mom, she was special. For those who did know her, you already know that. Attached is a picture of the beautiful tree. I think mom would be so pleased that the tree that brought so much joy to her and her grandchildren is still standing proud in the home of one of those grandchildren.
God Bless and Merry Christmas to All
Sandy

My Tuesday...My God Loves Me :)

See this cute girl with the devil horns... Ha ha! Today at Wal-Mart, she learned...Oh! I can stand up while I am sitting in the shopping cart! I made her sit down and she got right back up and laughed and laughed. LOL! She is a stinker. So she was banished to the basket because the seatbelt was broken. Love that stinker. :)

Also today, I needed a thrift store pick-me up. I am that type of person. I love to get one or two fun or needed things for me...cheap...at a thrift store...and I am a happy girl. :) Since we had a little extra time running errands, we got to stop. We all prayed before we went in...and this is what fun deals got for us!

A nice pair of white dress shoes for Addie for this spring.
A cute pair of nice casual brown shoes for Autumn.
A pair of four silver napkin rings...brand new with the original tags still attached!
A rolling pin...just in time for making our Christmas cookies tomorrow! (Last year, we had to borrow a pin.)
A gravy boat - that is white to match all occasions, has an attached lid and is insulated to keep the gravy warm! I have searched the last 3 years for one I really liked and never found one like this. I am so happy for this neat find!
Little House on the Prairie DVD set - 1st season. I LOVE this series. It is my favorite TV show series and my favorite books as well. I have six seasons and I found this one - practically brand new today!
One neat story...just this morning, the girls and I were talking about some fun things we were going to do when Daddy will be in Boise for work this week. I mentioned we could go to our new Burger King for their new free french fries this Friday...then we could have a special fun dinner and watch a Christmas movie. They asked, what movie? Addie says...Maybe we can watch the Little House Christmas ones. I said, Well, I don't have that one.
Well, guess what??? This DVD set has my favorite Little House Christmas show in it!

I think that God just LOVES me. Yep, I just am so blessed.

So we ended the day with $5 subs from Subway...a workout with my husband at the gym (Woo hoo!)...and watching the Biggest Lose finale with the family.

Blessings abound. Thank you, Lord.

Oh yes...I made this delicious homemade apple pie this morning! So, so good. :) I had to show it off...probably not as good as my sister, Rachel, could make it look. But I think it is spectacular!

My Christmas Momentos from Grandma...

Yesterday, I received a special package in the mail. My Aunt Sandy had sent these items to my sisters and I...

Cookie cutters that belonged to my Grandma...I will be using these with my daughters tomorrow as we make our cookies...the same as she did!

Copies of my Grandma's recipes that she often made...I love cooking and baking...and having recipes from my Grandma really is special to me.

Christmas tree ornaments...The same ones that we have put on Grandma's tree every Thanksgiving night at our grandchildren sleepovers...I now have some of these very ornaments from her collection hanging on our family tree. I can look at these ornaments every day...and relive those memories. :)

Lastly, you will notice the straggly looking things that resemble a Christmas tree and a bell. These are decorations that my Grandma made a very long time ago...out of styrofoam. You know, like the bottom of the package of meat? She saved a large number of them and cut out Christmas shapes. She then let all of us grandkids decorate them with glitter and markers.

Then every Christmas, we would decorate her windows with all of these Christmas shapes. I now have two of these that I have inherited. I have placed them behind my Christmas bells on my shelf. I bet Grandma is looking down from Heaven and laughing. And that a piece of styrofoam now resides on a special shelf of her granddaughter's shelf in her home in Reno. :) But that was Grandma...waste not!

And how special to be blogging about these items on this day...
for today would have been Grandma's 84th birthday.

So happy birthday to my Grandma...her very first birthday in Heaven. What a great birthday gift. :)

To end this on a light note...Sierra asked, "What are those ornaments from?" I said, "They were Great-Grandma's. She is in Heaven now." Sierra said, "Yeah! And she is wearing a pretty dress!"

Yes, she is wearing a pretty dress, Sierra. She surely is. :)

A few random pictures of the day...

This is Summer-our youngest. She will be 15 months in 3 days. :)

She loves the Christmas lights and Christmas trees! She always points for me to take her over to the window to see the neighbor's Christmas lights. :)

And our sweet Autumn...lost her other front tooth last night...so she will be singing the Christmas classic..."All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth." LOL! Sierra said that maybe Santa would bring her a tooth for Christmas! Ha ha!

Peppermint Mocha...

I am starting out my Monday morning with my snowman mug filled with coffee and my peppermint mocha creamer. Mmm! I watched the weather forecast...no snow in sight for the next 7 days. It will continue to be in the 40's during the day. I am craving some snow but perhaps for Christmas? It has been a very dry fall unlike last year and we could use the snowfall.

I have many, many, many things to do this week. My husband is going to Boise Wednesday through Saturday for work so this gives me a good chance to get many things done. One thing for sure on my list...make Christmas cut out cookies with the girls. :)

So I better make this short...I already realized that I need more church stationary to send out the visitor letters from Sunday so I will be adding a trip to Office Depot to my to-do list. I hope everyone has a productive and wonderful week! :)

Friday Tidbits...

Friday tidbits...

My husband's truck would not start and I was without a van for two days...however, praise the Lord we got it back running last night and I had my baby back today. :) I love my van...especially its heated leather seats on cold winter days. Today was actually very beautiful...sunny and nearly 50 degrees. I even kept the windows cracked as we drove because it was a little stuffy.

So after school, it was off to our errands! Stop at Walgreens and grab a flier...stop by the ATM and deposit two checks and get some cash...stop at the Dollar Tree for two birthday cards...stop by the Post Office, mail a book and our two birthday cards...on to the bank and make the van payment...stop by Babies R Us for a diaper deal (which they were out of :( )...drop off the hubby's dry cleaning...stop by Office Depot for my new 2012 calendar book - yay! I live by my calendar planner...and final stop...Wal-Mart for groceries and dog food.

Whew. Then we raced home. I had promised to babysit a church family's kids for a few hours...their mom had her tonsils out this morning. Made a quick meal of nachos and hot dogs and let the kiddos play...six girls and one boy. LOL! When my hubby got home from work at 6pm, we immediately left, dropped our kids off at my father-in-law's...and headed out for a short date. We had the December special at Subway and then did some Christmas shopping for the girls. After getting stuck on ideas...we decided to call it a night. We did get a few good gifts for the girls and I am excited about that.

When we got home, the girls went to bed. I hope to score another gift for Addie on EBay...more American Girl books for her collection. We will see if I win the bid tomorrow.

So that is the day...time to call it a night. :)

Your Christmas To-Do List...By The Shepherds

A Christmas To-Do List:

So often in the Christmas story, we focus on the main characters: Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus...as we should. Here are four things that we can learn from the shepherds that should make the top of our to-do list this Christmas season:

1. Believe.
When the angels announced that the Messiah had been born, the shepherds went immediately to see the Saviour. They did not ask each other..."What do you think, Joe? I'll go if you go." They did not wait for the 6 o'clock news to see if it really happened. They did not check it on Snopes to see if it was true. They did not Google it.
They just believed. That is faith.
Faith isn't a spectator sport; it's an active embracing of all that God has promised in Christ.

2. Obey.
The shepherds did exactly as they were told.
The world loves to celebrate the birth of Christ, but they hate to obey Him as the Lord of their lives.
They want to keep Christ in the manger. Remember: the manger is meaningless apart from the cross.

3. Tell.
When the shepherds saw the Christ child in the manger, they spread the word! They weren't preachers, they weren't missionaries, but that didn't matter.
They had heard and seen something that meant salvation for the whole world. Gives you goosebumps, doesn't it?
Don't fail to speak of the real meaning of the Christmas season - salvation.

4. Experience.
The shepherds were overwhelmed at the angel's announcement. They experienced holy wonder.
To engage in holy wonder this season...just stop. Think. Ponder. Take a wrapped nativity set with your children...and sit down one evening in the lights of the Christmas tree...and unwrap each character one at a time. Talk about that character and how they were instrumental in the birth of Christ and Christmas.
Really think about how amazing it truly was.

Ways To Simplify Your Christmas

Ways To Simplify Your Christmas:

1. Recognize other events throughout the year instead of focusing on “the big one”. Instead of sending out Christmas cards, send out Easter or Thanksgiving cards.

2. The annual family portrait doesn’t have to be a holiday affair. Take advantage of other family activities: Reunions, birthdays, vacations, big events of your year.

3. If you are part of a group that usually exchanges gifts, think about alternatives. Such as exchanging photos or services-such as babysitting.

4. Adopt a needy group, missionary, family or charity instead of giving to one another.

5. Arrange to have your holiday parties in public places so there is no preparation or clean up.

6. Combine purposes by making your party into a gift-wrapping, cookie-baking or decorating party.

7. Go bowling, miniature golfing or skating and enjoy the getting together instead of the preparation.

8. Do something for others such as caroling or volunteering at the homeless shelter – then go out for a warm drink at the local coffeehouse afterwards.

9. Make a special effort to remember and include those who are experiencing their first holiday after losing a loved one.

10. If you choose to give, make it your goal to give at least one item that expresses Christ’s love, whether in word or deed. Then increase your personal quota each year.

11. Don’t be tempted to put something on a credit card and call it a gift. You really don’t own it and you can’t give what doesn’t belong to you.

12. Divide your list into paydays and purchase items throughout the year. Each time you shop, try to buy one gift. Buy out of season…when things are on clearance after the season is over.

13. Give things to lesson someone else’s holiday stress: a book of stamps, wrapping paper, gift bags, tree lights.

14. Buy from home service companies that deliver to your home.

15. Save time and postage by selecting and purchasing out of town gifts at chain stores that allow the recipient to pick up the gift at a location near them.

16. If you make gifts, mass-produce them. For example: a jar of home-canned apple butter or a special bookmark. In doing this, you can buy supplies in quantity and focus on doing one thing well.

17. Pass along something of yours.

18. Shop odd places: Garage sales, antique stores, thrift stores.

19. Take the talent you have and give that talent to others: Sewing, quilting, knitting/crocheting, baking, canning, photo taking, decorating, etc.

20. Make an effort to do kindnesses every day.

Volunteer at the food bank, offer to babysit for a single parent or a busy couple, visit the nursing home, help carry someone’s groceries, offer your place in line at the grocery store, smile at a stranger.

The key to downscaling and de-stressing your holidays is having the right attitude. This isn’t about the Grinch stealing Christmas. J It’s about a child of the King endeavoring to give others more of God…and give God more of you.

The first Christmas was a gathering of humble people and heavenly hosts whose greatest joy was simply to gaze upon the Savior of mankind. It helps me to remember that I need to clear away the clutter if the world is going to have a chance to see Him still.

Recipe: Sweet and Salty Snowmen Cookies

Here is the recipe for my cookies that I made for our ladies Christmas cookie exchange at our monthly Bible study:

Sweet & Salty Snowmen Cookies

Ritz crackers (I used 3 sleeves of crackers)
peanut butter
almond bark (I used 24 oz.-1 package)
shortening (Approximately 2 tbsp.)
candies/milk chocolate chips (Red hot candies, mini and regular chocolate chips, candy corn)

Make cookie sandwiches with two crackers and peanut butter in between. Melt the almond bark with 2 tbsp. of shortening. Stir well. Dip and coat each cracker sandwich into the melted almond bark using a fork.

Place on waxed paper.

After dipping, decorate the cookie how you would like. One idea is to use large chocolate chips as the eyes, a half candy corn as the nose, mini chocolate chips to make the smile and red hot candies as the cheeks. And you have a snowman! :)

Another idea is to melt some of the chocolate chips with a tsp of shortening and drizzle on the top.

I did four different styles...change it up how you would like. Very simple and very yummy!

TLC Meeting Tonight!

Join us tonight for our TLC - Touching Ladies for Christ - Bible study at Sierra View Baptist Church! Our meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Any lady in the Reno/Sparks area is welcome to attend. We enjoy a time of refreshments and fellowship...and then dive into our lesson for the week.

Today's meeting is our Christmas cookie exchange. Each lady is asked to bring two dozen cookies to share. We will have coffee, hot cocoa and eggnog as well.

Our lesson for tonight is "Our To-Do List For Christmas...Four Things We Can Learn From the Shepherds" and "Ways To Simplify Your Christmas". I believe that you will be encouraged and helped by the lessons that are taught in our meetings. You will also meet many great Christian lady friends.

Church Decorating...

On Thursday, after I cleaned the church, I decorated for Christmas. I decided to go with blues, silver and gold to flow with the auditorium colors. Here is the tree. We didn't have our own building last Christmas so this was a new adventure for me. :)

I found these 4 ft. potted lit trees on sale and they fit well on the platform. I also got these beautiful white poinsettas.

It really does look so pretty in person. And my husband kept exclaiming how nice it looked...and since he's the pastor (and my husband ;)...that's all that matters to me. :)

Winter Saturday Days...

Enjoying a productive yet restful Saturday. :) This morning, I started two loads of laundry, did the dishes from the evening before and straightened the house...then it was get the girls dressed and ready for the day and shower myself.

Then the family headed to the church for our visitation time. Our family passed out postcards in a nearby neighborhood for an hour. It was a brisk but sunny day. We were all thankful for our warm coats, hats and gloves. :)

Then back home for steaming bowls of ham and bean soup in the crockpot with wheat rolls on the side. With sweet tea to wash it down. Mmm! It is nice to have lunch prepared and ready. Then more dishes, swept and vacuumed, two more loads of laundry and take a bowl of soup over to the father-in-law. :)

Then tying up loose ends for Sunday...type and print out the youth worker meeting agenda, type and print Sunday's announcements, make a few calls about a special event we are planning for Christmas, text and e-mail about prayer list updates...and now to finish up my lesson for our ladies Bible study this Tuesday.

I also got the mail...and found a thank you card with a $25 gift card to a local grocery store from some dear friends - the Root family. :) And what a coincidence...it is to a grocery store that I have been thinking about trying because they double coupons. I love how the Lord works in these sweet ways!

So this has been my Saturday so far...hope yours is just as good. :)
